International Evaluation Meeting Successfully Held for Clinical Medicine Degree Authorization at Central South University

On December 8, 2023, the International Evaluation Meeting for the Clinical Medicine Degree Authorization at Central South University took place simultaneously in the Xiaoqian Building on the eighth floor at Xiangya's new campus and via Zoom. The meeting was attended by five international experts, including Professor Yuqing Chen from the University of Michigan, Professor Liang Wang from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, Professor Xia Bai from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Professor Jin Lin from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and Professor Hui Zhang from the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. Additionally, Central South University's Vice President Zhihong Li, Xiangya School of Medicine's Executive Vice Dean Minghua Wu, Vice Deans Xuejun Li and Yi Zeng, Vice President Yue Zhang from Xiangya Second Hospital, Vice President Yan Zhang from Xiangya Third Hospital, and representatives from relevant departments of Xiangya School of Medicine and its affiliated hospitals, along with faculty and student representatives, totaling over 40 participants, joined the conference. The evaluation session was presided over by Professor Yuqing Chen, the head of the expert group.

Before the evaluation began, Vice President ZhihongLidelivered the opening speech. On behalf of the university, he extended a warm welcome to the evaluation experts and expressed anticipation for a comprehensive diagnosis of the construction of our clinical medicine degree authorization, urging the experts to provide constructive suggestions for improvement with a global perspective, international standards, and an objective attitude. The goal is to collectively elevate the development of our clinical medicine discipline to a higher level.

During the meeting, XuejunLi, the Vice Dean of Xiangya School of Medicine, provided a comprehensive overview of the construction of the clinical medicine degree authorization, covering aspects such as the status of the degree program, training objectives and standards, talent cultivation, service contributions, and distinctive features of the education. He also addressed questions from the expert group regarding issues such as integrating medical data sharing among the three affiliated hospitals of Xiangya, internationalizing student education, and addressing student employment and delayed graduation.

Subsequently, the expert group held separate discussions with representatives of teachers and postgraduate students to conduct in-depth research on the construction of the degree program. The expert group concluded that our clinical medicine degree authorization demonstrates a well-established system and clear characteristics in talent cultivation and scientific research, with evident strengths. The program's training objectives are clear, the training plan is well-structured, and the degree awarding standards are reasonable. The teaching and research support conditions, as well as the scientific and reasonable configuration of the faculty, are robust. The curriculum reflects new medical science concepts such as interdisciplinary integration, and the mentor selection system and training plans are standardized. Through a sound system of awards and scholarships, a strict academic training, practical training, and academic exchange measures, the overall quality of graduate education and the level of thesis writing are ensured. The employment situation of students is favorable, with high satisfaction among graduate students. The expert group also provided many constructive opinions and targeted suggestions for the future high-quality development of our clinical medicine degree authorization.

Finally, Executive Vice Dean MinghuaWudelivered the closing speech. On behalf of the School of Medicine, she expressed sincere gratitude to the participating experts, leaders, faculty and student representatives, and all staff. She emphasized the need to fully seize the opportunity of this evaluation meeting, earnestly learn from the valuable suggestions of the experts, promote improvement through evaluation, and continuously optimize the development direction of the degree program. The aim is to actively advance the high-quality development of clinical medicine, emphasizing the quality of talent cultivation.
