New Breakthrough! Two More Medical Disciplines Rank Among World’s Top 0.1% in ESI

On May 8, 2025, Clarivate Analytics released the latest Essential Science Indicators (ESI) rankings. Two disciplines of Central South University, namely Biology & Biochemistry and Molecular Biology & Genetics, have newly broken into the world’s top 0.1% ESI disciplines, marking a landmark breakthrough. Among the university’s nine disciplines ranking top 0.1% globally, four are medicine-related: Clinical Medicine, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Biology & Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology & Genetics.

In terms of overall ESI performance, Central South University has published 101,572 ESI-indexed papers with a total of 2,040,006 citations. It ranks 87th among the 9,718 institutions worldwide that have at least one discipline in the ESI top 1%. To date, the university boasts 1 discipline in the global top 0.01% ESI ranking and 9 disciplines in the top 0.1%, tying for 6th place among mainland Chinese universities. A total of 19 disciplines are listed in the global top 1%, ranking the university 4th nationwide.

Statistical data shows that the university has published 4,004 ESI papers in Biology & Biochemistry, accumulating 80,249 citations, and ranks 147th among 1,559 global institutions with this discipline in the top 1%. For Molecular Biology & Genetics, there are 4,970 papers with 141,830 citations, placing Central South University 109th out of 1,141 qualifying global institutions.
