On the morning of January 8, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council held the 2018 National Science and Technology Awards Conference in Beijing. Leaders of the Party and the State attended the conference and presented awards to the winners. 278 projects and 7 scientific and technological experts won prizes from the 2018 National Science and Technology Awards through the evaluation of the disciplinary and professional evaluation group, the evaluation committee and the award committee. The project Individualized Hypertension Therapy Strategies, Products and Promotion and Application Based on Pharmacogenomics jointly completed by Xiangya Hospital, Central South University and Hunan Honghao Gene Biotechnology Co., Ltd. won the second prize in the 2018 National Science and Technology Awards.
Led by Professor Zhou Honghao, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Director of the Institute of Clinical Pharmacology of Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, the project had members including Liu Zhaoqian, Zhang Wei, Li Qing, Chen Xiaoping, Zhao Zhenyu, Zhou Gan, Liu Jie, Li Zhi and Yin Jiye. The project first confirmed and systematically elucidated the new genetic mechanism of ethnic and individual differences in antihypertensive drug reactions, and initiated the field of pharmacogenomics in China; it developed the first detection kit to guide the genotyping of individualized drugs for hypertension, formulated the individualized treatment strategy for hypertension based on pharmacogenomics; and established a “theoretical research - product development - education and training - promotion and application” translational medical system and formed a individualized treatment characterized by and based on pharmacogenomics. The project developed a product named “Gene Detection Kit for Individualized Medication for Hypertension” which has been successfully transformed to create a profit of RMB 100 million for enterprises. The project-related series of studies initiated the individualized treatment based on pharmacogenomics in China, making the research and application of pharmacogenomics in China at the world leading level.
It is reported that 10 scientific research achievements of Central South University won prizes in the 2018 National Science and Technology Progress Awards, covering geophysics, rail transit, surveying and mapping, metallurgy, mineral processing, clinical pharmacology and other disciplines. Among which, Central South University is the first completion unit in 7 projects and a collaboration unit in 3 projects. Central South University is ranked the fourth in terms of the number of awards among all award-winning colleges and universities nationwide.
