Vice President Tian Yongquan Leads Delegation to the United States for Xiangya Centennial Celebration Promotion and Research

From June 1 to June 16, 2013, Vice President Tian Yongquan led a delegation to the United States for the promotion and research of the centennial celebration of Xiangya. The delegation included Professor Cao Ya, former member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Chairman of the Hunan Provincial Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, and Executive Vice Chairman of the Xiangya Cultural Research Association; Professor Zhang Xin, Vice Dean of Xiangya Medical College; Professor Cao Zemin, Chairman of Xiangya Group and Secretary-General of Xiangya Cultural Research Association; and Dr. Liu Jiyang, Director of the Health and Population Commission of Changsha City.

Accompanying the delegation to the United States were Mr. Ma Jingjun, the chief producer of the thirty-episode documentary "Centennial Xiangya," and Professor Zhang Mengjia, the chief scriptwriter.

The 16-day inspection and research activities covered visits to seven cities, including meetings with the Yale-China Association, the China Medical Board (CMB), the Chen-Pien Li Memorial, Xiangya Overseas Alumni Association, and branches in New York, Boston, New Haven, Washington, Atlanta, Houston, and Los Angeles. The delegation also met with leaders of Harvard Medical School and Yale University School of Medicine and visited Cornell University, Rockefeller University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Wesleyan University, Yale University, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), GMH, Houston Medical Center, and UCLA School of Nursing.

During the visit, the delegation held more than 10 discussions with nearly 200 alumni. Vice President Tian Yongquan and Chairman Cao Ya introduced the purpose and significance of this promotion and research, inviting overseas alumni to return to their alma mater for the centennial celebration next October. Mr. Ma Jingjun presented the creative ideas behind the documentary "Centennial Xiangya," and Secretary-General Cao Zemin introduced the purpose and significance of the establishment of the Xiangya Cultural Research Association. He briefly outlined the work and achievements of the research association, including the initiation of the compilation of the "Xiangya Series Cultural Collection" related to next year's centennial celebration, the publication of the book "Old Xiangya Stories", and the filming progress of the thirty-episode documentary "Centennial Xiangya." They also launched activities such as "Collecting Xiangya Stories", "Seeking Xiangya Relics", and "Commemorating the Centennial Xiangya", along with the design and production of the "Centennial Xiangya Commemorative Stamp Album". The preparations for the Xiangya Museum and Sculpture Garden were set to begin later in the year.

During the research activities, Vice President Tian Yongquan also discussed medical education cooperation matters with leaders and experts from medical schools at Harvard University, Yale University, CMB, and the Yale-China Association.

At theChen-Pien LiMemorial, the delegation received donations of physical objects and materials related to Mr.Chen-Pien Lifrom Chairman Jia-ruiLi. In Atlanta, the delegation accepted book donations from alumni Liu Shen. The overseas research work for the thirty-episode documentary "Centennial Xiangya" also achieved fruitful results, completing the preliminary overseas shooting work, including scenes from the CMB, the meeting at Harvard University School of Medicine, and the board meeting of the Yale-China Association.

The promotion and research activities, lasting for 16 days, were a complete success, and the delegation returned to Changsha on June 16.
