From November 26 to December 6, Prof. Hao Wei from the Department of Psychiatry of Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University and the National Clinical Research Center for Mental Disorders was invited to visit various institutions under the system of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). These included the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Additionally, Prof. Hao Wei had productive exchanges with academic institutions such as the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP). Furthermore, he engaged in face-to-face discussions with the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the U.S. Department of State, delving into the details of the drug control situation and related matters.
During his visit to the U.S., Prof. Hao Wei engaged in discussions with U.S. experts on the current situation, challenges, and strategies concerning drug control on both sides, and shared the major accomplishments of China in drug control. Moreover, both parties also exchanged strategies and methods for reducing drug demand and hazards, as well as new ideas, new projects, and new products in drug treatment. Prof. Hao Wei introduced some of the latest technological achievements and treatment methods in drug rehabilitation in China, highlighting the effectiveness of the newly developed anti-relapse drug, naltrexone implant. The discussions also included negotiations to establish a mechanism for long-term cooperation.
Prof. Hao Wei met with Kemp Chester, Senior Advisor to the Director of ONDCP of the White House, and fellow officials.
Prof. Hao Wei visited the INL of the U.S. Department of State, where he held talks with Brian Morales and other officials.
During his visit in the U.S., Prof. Hao Wei was invited to deliver a seminar titled "Self-Recognition and -Response to Psychological Issues" for embassy personnel, addressing their inquiries about mental health concerns.
