On the morning of March 17th, the 7th Annual Academic Conference for C.J. Huang Medical Fellowship was held at Liuyang People's Hospital. Attendees included Prof. Cao Ya, Chair of the C.J. Huang Medical Felowship Nomination Committee, Vice Chair Huang Yanru, Committee Members Bai Yi, Wu Zhigang, and Xie Yun, Vice Dean of Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University Li Xuejun, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Xiangya Hospital Wu Xilin, Party Secretary and Director of the Liuyang Municipal Health Bureau Liu Guotai, the entire leadership team of Liuyang People's Hospital, as well as scholars who participated in the fellowship program and representatives from collaborating institutions. The conference was chaired by Wu Zhigang from Xiangya School of Medicine.
Chair Cao Ya delivered the opening speech, emphasizing the importance of learning from and carrying forward the patriotic spirit of Mr. C.J. Huang. She expressed the hope that scholars who receive fellowship support to study in the United States shall apply the knowledge gained to clinical practice upon their return, benefiting more people.
Subsequently, Chair Cao Ya and Party Secretary Zhang Yong of Liuyang People's Hospital jointly presented the "Contribution Award for Scholars of the C.J. Huang Medical Fellowship at Stanford" to the awardees. Professor Li Xuejun, Vice Dean of Xiangya School of Medicine and Professor of Neurosurgery at Xiangya Hospital, presented the awards, thanking the awardees for their contributions to the development of neurosurgery in Liuyang City and Hunan Province, as well as for their efforts in expanding international cooperation. Professor Li expressed his commitment to continue working with the scholars to contribute to the development of medical care in Hunan in clinical practice, education, and research.
In his speech, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Xiangya Hospital Wu Xilin combined Mr. C.J. Huang's involvement in the resistance against Japan with his experience as a construction engineer at Zhi Jiang Airport in Hunan Province. He stated that medical workers should inherit Huang's noble qualities of sincerity, patriotism, and dedication to benefiting the community, and should remain steadfast in their beliefs to promote the high-quality development of their hospitals.
Party Secretary and Director of the Liuyang Municipal Health Bureau Liu Guotai expressed gratitude for the invaluable contributions made by Mr. C.J. Huangand the long-standing support from experts at Xiangya Hospital. He thanked Xiangya for its assistance in the development of disciplines at Liuyang People's Hospital and stated that relying on the C.J. Huang Medical Fellowshipand international platforms, the hospital will further enhance its medical capabilities and service levels to better safeguard the health of the people in the border areas of Hunan and Jiangxi provinces.
After the conference, nine scholars from various specialties such as neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, endocrinology, and gynecology at our university engaged in activities such as voluntary consultations, ward rounds, and teaching sessions with doctors from Liuyang People's Hospital.
The C.J. Huang Medical Fellowship at Stanford was established in 1987 by Mr. C.J. Huang, a Chinese American from Liuyang, at Stanford University Medical Center in the United States as a permanent fund project. It aims to support young doctors from his hometown to study at Stanford University Medical Center and then return to help improve the medical standards in their hometown. Each year, one young doctor is fully funded to study at Stanford Medical Center for one year. Following Mr. C.J. Huang's requirements, the C.J. Huang Medical Felowship Nomination Committeewas established in Hunan. Since 2000, Xiangya Hospital, the Second Xiangya Hospital, the Third Xiangya Hospital, the Xiangya School of Stomatology, and Hunan Cancer Hospital, the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University have successively become collaborating institutions for the fellowship. To date, a total of 13 scholars from our university, including Shu Chang, Shen Lu, Wang Bing, and Gu Wenping, have been sent to Stanford University for further studies.
