Celebrating 110 Years of Xiangya Medical Education: 9 Hospitals and 41 Teams Participate in the Xiangya General Surgery Live Surgery Week

Recently, Central South University Xiangya School of Medicine, the Hospital Management Office, and Xiangya Hospital teamed up to host the “Xiangya General Surgery Live Surgery Week”, celebrating the 110th anniversary of Xiangya Medical Education with live surgery broadcasts. All general surgery departments from nine hospitals in the Xiangya system participated, including Xiangya Hospital, Xiangya Second Hospital, Xiangya Third Hospital, the affiliated Cancer Hospital, the affiliated Children’s Hospital, the affiliated Changsha Hospital, the affiliated Changde Hospital, the affiliated Zhuzhou Hospital, and the affiliated Haikou Hospital.

On September 2, the event kicked off at the main venue, Xiangya Hospital. Among those in attendance were Professor Chang Shi, Party Secretary of Xiangya School of Medicine; Professor Peng Shifang, Director of the Hospital Management Office and Vice Dean of the School; and Professor Qian Zhaoxin, Vice Dean of Xiangya Hospital. Directors and experts from the participating departments joined the opening ceremony both online and in person.

Professor Chang highlighted that over the past 110 years, the general surgery department at Xiangya Hospital has thrived, building a strong academic foundation and gaining extensive clinical experience across various surgical fields. He described the live broadcasts as a bold innovation that opens the operating room doors to the world, allowing more doctors to learn about the latest techniques and trends in surgery, thus promoting rapid advancements in the field. This event not only showcases Xiangya's medical education but also encourages open dialogue in general surgery.

Director Peng emphasized that these live broadcasts create a valuable platform for colleagues to exchange ideas and foster innovation in minimally invasive surgery techniques.

Vice Dean Qian pointed out that by adopting an “Internet + Surgery” approach, they are promoting advanced techniques and creating new opportunities for clinical application, talent development, and research.

Professor Pei Haiping, Director of General Surgery at Xiangya Hospital, and Professor Zhang Jianquan from the affiliated Haikou Hospital spoke as representatives of the Xiangya hospitals.

During the live event, 41 surgical teams from the nine hospitals participated, covering various areas such as liver, biliary, pancreatic, gastrointestinal, breast, thyroid, and vascular surgery, with a total of 44 surgeries broadcasted. The event garnered support and praise from colleagues across the country, accumulating 12,497 minutes of broadcast time and over 32,000 viewers by 8 PM on September 6. The Boao Medical Platform recorded more than 210,000 clicks.

This event showcased the expertise and technical capabilities of the Xiangya general surgery teams, bridging information gaps between regions and institutions. It provided an online platform for general surgery professionals nationwide, effectively promoting medical knowledge sharing and enhancing collaboration within the medical community. Professor Chang noted that this event is a key part of the celebrations for the 110th anniversary of Xiangya Medical Education, highlighting Xiangya’s medical technology and educational achievements through real-time surgery broadcasts. It celebrates the remarkable history of Xiangya while looking ahead to the future of medical development.
