As 2024 marks the 110th Anniversary of Xiangya Medical Education of Central South University, Xiangya School of Medicine, in partnership with the China Medical Board (CMB), has co-authored and released the 3D pop-up book “The XYSM Campus: A Tour of Its History”. The Book was officially unveiled at the Book Launch Ceremony on December 6, with Li Wenkai, Chief Representative of CMB in China, Larry Bates, Chair of the Yale-China Association Board of Trustees, and Robert Theodore Hume of the Hume Family in attendance.
At the event, Li Zhihong, Vice President of Central South University, shared the time-honored history and cultural legacy of Xiangya since the founding of Hunan-Yale Medical College in 1914. He noted that the University will expand its “circle of friends” and deepen the collaboration with international organizations and overseas universities through development opportunities brought by the 110th anniversary. Through these exchanges, Xiangya Medicine is poised for even greater achievements in the future.
“This year, CMB is pleased to present you with this pop-up book that highlights the history and development of your campus and will serve as a legacy and a tribute to your legacy of the medical school. We’re honored to be part of Xiangya’s journey, long journey, and look forward to continued collaborations in the years to come”, said Roger Glass, President of CMB, in his video specially recorded for this Book Launch.
Li Wenkai, Chief Representative of CMB in China, said that this year holds special significance for both Xiangya and CMB, as they also honor CMB’s 110th anniversary. This shared milestone makes today's gathering more historical and valuable, as it witnesses the bilateral partnership that has lasted for over a century.
He elaborated on the background and design of the book, which employs the intricate art of paper sculpture to showcase the historic buildings of Xiangya medicine, including the Xiangya Red Building, the Xiangya Foreign Faculty Building, the Small Auditorium, and the Office Building. Its pictures in its 3D shapes vividly depict the Teaching Building and Science Laboratory Building for medical preparatory courses, including laboratories for physics, chemistry, and biology in the Mayuanling Campus of Hunan-Yale Medical College. The book featuring Xiangya’s illustrious history and culture presents the historic architecture of the Xiangya System more directly and interactively.
The content-rich “The XYSM Campus: A Tour of Its History” that chronicles the institution’s journey is written in both Chinese and English, with the architecture paper models able to be assembled by hand. It highlights Xiangya’s achievements and milestones over the past century while leaving space for new brilliance in future medical education and healthcare for generations to come.
