CSU President Li Jiancheng Leads Delegation to Visit U.S.

From October 23 to 30, President Li Jiancheng led a delegation to visit the United States and was invited to attend the Yan Fuqing Memorial Meeting and Statue Unveiling Ceremony. He visited the University of Michigan, Yale University, the Yale-China Association, the China Medical Board, Emory University, and Xiangya Overseas Alumni Association, where he visited CSU alumni and students in the United States. The delegation members also included CSU Executive Vice President Chen Xiang and leaders of Xiangya School of Medicine, Xiangya School of Nursing, and Xiangya Hospital, etc.

On October 24, Li Jiancheng and his delegation visited the University of Michigan, where they inspected the Clinical Simulation Center and helicopter rescue platform of the University of Michigan Medical School, as well as the "M City" of the College of Engineering. The delegation experienced intelligent driving and navigation technologies. They had a symposium with Laurie Kay McCauley, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs of the University of Michigan, and Professor Joseph C. Kolars, Academician of National Academy of Medicine carried out in-depth exchanges on stronger, deeper cooperation in teaching, scientific research, and medical care on a larger scale. Vice President McCauley said that Central South University has a complete range of disciplines with impressive strengths. The CSU students studying at the University of Michigan have been performing excellently, and she hoped to further expand cooperation in disciplines such as rail transit and computer science.

Qin Guowen, Vice Governor of the People's Government of Hunan Province, Yuan Zhenghong, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Fudan University, Steven Wilkinson, Vice Provost of Yale University, Nancy Brown, Dean of Yale School of Medicine, John Frisbie, President of the Yale-China Association, Yan Zhiyuan, first grandson of Yan Fuqing, and Doreen Chen, granddaughter of Yan Fuqing, attended the event. Li Jiancheng said that he hoped to take this event as an opportunity to lift the cooperation between Central South University and Yale University to a new level, further expand exchanges between the teachers and students of the two universities, and further expand cooperation in new areas such as clinical research and hospital management based on existing good cooperation. Before the ceremony, Mary H. Yan, Yan Fuqing's daughter-in-law, donated more than ten valuable documents to the university, including Yan Fuqing's certificates obtained in different periods. More than 200 people, including teachers and students of Yale University and Yan's family members, attended the memorial meeting.

On October 26, Li Jiancheng and his delegation visited the Yale-China Association and Yale University, and attended the working meeting of the Yale-China Association Health Committee. Qin Guowen, Vice Governor of the People's Government of Hunan Province, and John Frisbie, President of Yale-China Association, attended the meeting. After the meeting, Li Jiancheng and his delegation met with Professor Peter Salovey, President of Yale University, and Professor Nancy J. Brown, Dean of Yale School of Medicine, respectively. They had an in-depth discussion on Sino-U.S. cooperation in medical education, medical cooperation, and cultural exchanges. Li Jiancheng said that Central South University will continue to broaden the channels of friendly cooperation with Yale University, set out on a new journey in the century-old cooperation between the two sides, endow the century-old friendship with new connotations, and make new contributions to the promotion of Sino-U.S. cultural and educational exchanges and cooperation. President Salovey said that Yale University has a time-honored relationship with Hunan and that he looked forward to in-depth, broader, and all-round cooperation with Central South University in the future. He was pleased to accept the invitation to visit Central South University and attend the 110th anniversary celebration of Xiangya School of Medicine in the next year.

On October 27, Li Jiancheng and his delegation visited the China Medical Board (CMB) and held talks with Roger Glass, President of the CMB, and others. The two sides had in-depth exchanges on cooperation in the fields of training of high-level young scientific research talents and postdoctoral exchanges between China and the U.S. In the afternoon, the delegation visited Emory University School of Medicine. The two sides reached a consensus on continuing cooperation in deepening the eight-year medical student exchange program.

On October 28, Li Jiancheng and his delegation visited Xiangya Overseas Alumni Association and participated in alumni activities. Li Jiancheng congratulated the alumni for their outstanding achievements in different positions and thanked the association for its support of the educational cause of CSU. He warmly invited the alumni to come back home more often and work together to promote the development of medical education and health care in China and the U.S.
