On October 28, 2023, in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone in West Africa, Thinking Pink Breast Cancer Foundation collaborated with the Sierra Leone National Cycling Association in organizing the grand International Marathon and Cycling Race. The 24th Chinese (Hunan) medical team aiding Sierra Leone, recommended by the Chinese Embassy and invited by the Ministry of Health of Sierra Leone, participated in this event. Zhang Leiyi and Liao Haiyan, two associate chief physicians from the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, took part in the 15-kilometer and 5-kilometer marathon races respectively, running for love and health.
Deputy team leader Zhang Leiyi efficiently organized the medical team's participation in the race, with a total of five participants and two support staff. Near the marathon finish line, a Sierra Leonean athlete collapsed and fell unconscious. Without hesitation, Zhang immediately fetched the first aid kit and coordinated with fellow medical team members Long Jian and Liao Haiyan for urgent medical assistance. Guided by Zhang, the team worked swiftly, significantly improving the patient's condition. This prompt action earned praise from Sierra Leoneans, event organizers, local media, and the Chinese Embassy. The heartfelt expression of “Chinese doctor, Good!” reflects the deep trust of African people in the Chinese medical team.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative proposed by China, and also the 60th anniversary of the occasion when China dispatched its first medical aid team to Africa.
