Xiangya Hospital and Johns Hopkins Hospital Hold Joint Webinar on Rheumatology

On the evening of May 26, Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, China and Johns Hopkins Hospital, USA, jointly held a webinar on Rheumatology.Redonda Miller, President of Johns Hopkins Hospital; Charles M. Wiener, President of Johns Hopkins Medicine International; Lei Guanghua, President of Xiangya Hospital (XYH); Li Xuejun, Director of XYH’s Office for International Cooperation and Exchange (OICE); Guo Hua, Director of XYH’s Research Department; Luo Hui, Director of XYH’s Department of Rheumatology and Immunology; and relevant physicians and staff members attended the webinar, which was chaired by Li Yisha, deputy director of the Department of Rheumatology and Immunology, XYH.

President Lei Guanghua and President Redonda Miller delivered opening speeches on behalf of both parties and introduced their hospitals respectively. Both expressed their intentions to deepen cooperation in the future. President Charles M. Wiener introduced Johns Hopkins" global strategy and projects and expressed his hope to develop closer offline cooperation with XYH after the pandemic.

In the academic session, Dr. Guo Muyao introduced the history and status quo of the Department of Rheumatology and Immunology of XYH; attending physicians Wu Shiyao and Liu Yangtengyu shared two difficult cases of lupus with infection. Dr. Philip Seo, Director of Johns Hopkins Vasculitis Center, gave a lecture on "Vasculitis Mimics"; and Dr. Andrea Fava shared a series of challenging cases in lupus and his experience in the diagnosis and treatment of such patients with atypical pathogen infections; he also gave his views and suggestions on the difficult cases shared by the two physicians from XYH. Afterwards, Professor Zuo Xiaoxia, chief expert of the Department of Rheumatology and Immunology of XYH, presided over the discussion session. Participants exchanged ideas and experience on the cultivation of young doctors and clinical research.

Director Luo Hui said in the closing remarks that the rich contents covered and the in-depth discussions on the difficult and hot issues encountered in clinical work provided valuable reference and inspiration for improving clinical care and optimizing treatment plan in the future. He hoped to built more connections with international top hospitals and to better cultivate young professionals and promote discipline development through international cooperation.

Director Li Xuejun introduced that after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, OICE quickly adjusted to the new situation and vigorously expanded online communication to ensure that the hospital’s academic exchanges were not interrupted. Following the webinar on orthopaedics with the Hospital for Special Surgery in April this year, today marked the second in-depth dialogue held in XYH with international top hospitals. OICE would continue to expand high-quality overseas resources to advance the hospital’s internationalization and discipline development.
